Legends of Tomorrow 1x10 "Progeny" Easter Egg Review

Last week's episode of Legends of Tomorrow was full of little Easter Eggs to discuss. I've chosen 4 I want to talk about. I'm ready to get started.

So is Sydney his twin, or did they just make a statue of Ray thinking he was Sydney?

In "Progeny", Ray believes the statue above to be of himself, and that his girlfriend he left behind in 2016 must have been pregnant when he left. Luckily, Ray finds out he is not a father, but that it was his brother Sydney who continued the family legacy. In the comics, Ray does have a brother, but his name is not Sydney. His brother's name was Danny. Danny was only mentioned in one comic from the Atom special of Brightest Day. He was a firefighter who died saving a little girl's life. Not sure if they will mention Sydney/Danny again, or why they didn't just call him Danny. An upcoming episode of Legends of Tomorrow, "Last Refuge", will feature all the Legends in their childhood. Perhaps we will get to see Sydney along with Ray as younger boys.

When talking to Captain Cold, Mick says, "And if you kill me, well, it's better than being locked up in this place like some kind of circus freak." In the comics, Heatwave was in the circus. He joined as a fire eater before accidently burning the circus down. This was a nice little nod to his backstory, which will be coming to the show soon.

 It's clear by now Snart is a Star Wars nerd. Between the "Boba Fett" comment from the pilot and the entire episode of "Marooned", geeky space references are commonly heard on the Wave Rider. Captain Cold amusingly quotes, "We already know what pushes this punk to the dark side: Savage." Unfortunately, Anakin and Per Degaton share a similar fate, death.

How can you make playing with a ball so sexy?

Lately, I've been seeing a lot of Captain Canary on the internet. What is Captain Canary? The romantic paring of Captain Cold and White Canary obviously. At first, I wasn't really on board with the whole thing. For starters, there is nothing canon about it in the comics. I may be wrong about this, but I'm 99% sure they never even meet in the comics. Number 2, I didn't think the writers would make it canon on the show. I figured the little teases, such as Len and Sarah getting drinks and dancing together, were just an angle of friendship between the two. But Captain Cold's comment makes it clear that their relationship is more than mere friendship.

Sarah asks, "What about your feelings?", when talking about Heat Wave. Captain Cold, not wanting to discuss his ex-friend, responds, "About you?". This is the first official confirmation that Leonard Snart does hold romantic feelings for Sarah Lance.

Now, I'm not going to say I'm 100% on with this ship. I'm not going to scream and write fanfiction yet (though I probably will read some). I can say that I am excited to see whatever is happening between them continue. They are a cute paring. I just don't want it to get in the way of Captain Cold and Heatwave rekindling their brother-like relationship. I'm down for it though ;).

That's all folks!! I'm sorry to say, but I will be out all week because I'm going to an engineering competition in Waco!!! Wish me luck. Sorry I won't be able to post anything else until at least Sunday, but I promise when I do post, it will be worth the wait. I want to do something fun in honor of Mirror Master's birthday, so I'm thinking about doing a themed week for him. Three different posts tying to his character. Legends of Tomorrow 1x10 "Progeny" Review

Legends of Tomorrow's 10th episode, "Progeny", was released this Thursday at 7 PM. The main story line centers around Per Degaton, a young child who will one day grow up to release a virus that will kill over half of the world's population. It focuses on the team's internal struggle, particularly Rip's, whether or not to kill Per. Killing him could mean saving the lives of millions, including Rip's wife and son. However, the team must decide if it is a noble enough cause, considering they would be murdering a young child who has not yet committed a crime. Two other conflicts happening simultaneously involve Ray and Kendra and Mick and Len. Ray discovers he may be a father and Kendra continues to have flashbacks about her old lover Carter, causing romantic tensions between the two. Mick is still locked up in the brig after revealing himself as Chronos.

Let's start by reviewing the main arc. It was obvious from the get-go how the episode was going to play out. The team was gonna meet the kid, plan on killing the kid, then not kill the kid. I don't think CW would want to promote the murdering of children, even if that child was supposedly "baby Hitler" Two-Point-0. I thought it was interesting that Rip was the one that came the closest to shooting Per. Besides Len, Rip was the only one who actually wanted to kill the boy. Even Canary and Heat Wave were against killing him, which is saying something. Before this episode, my feelings about Rip were a bit negative. After this episode, I like him a bit more I suppose. The way they played Rip's emotions really gave him some well-earned character development.

To kill or not to kill. That is the question.

Some people are saying that Captain Cold wanting to kill Per was off character. In a comic book sense, I agree. The whole point of Captain Cold in the comics is that he is a villain with morals. He doesn't kill. However, TV show Captain Cold is repeatedly shown to have one weakness, his sister. It makes sense that he would want Per to die since Len's main value is family. Leonard knows that Per will kill Rip's wife and child in the future. If it were Lisa in danger, Leonard would kill Per without question. Anything to protect Golden Glider. So it's not entirely off character. I guess the writers just needed one other person on the team besides Rip to want him dead. Though, it's not like the team usually agrees with Rip anyway.

                                                                                                

The second part of this episode I wanted to discuss is Kendra and Ray's relationship. I can say without a doubt that Kendra is my least favorite character on the team. If you are a fan of her, please don't take offense. I just find the other members to be much more interesting. Additionally, the main reason I got interested in the Rogues is because I started shipping Cisco Ramon and Lisa Snart, Captain Cold's little sister, on The Flash. The Flash first introduces Kendra as a love interest for Cisco. It kind of ruined my Flash OTP, so Hawkgirl didn't make a very good first impression. I thought I would warm up to her after a bit, but I haven't. I liked Carter better, and even though its nice having some female super heroes on the team, I wish Kendra would have been the teammate to leave.

Cheating on your boyfriend with your dead boyfriend.

In contrast, I adore Ray Palmer. Since I do not watch Arrow, I didn't really know much about the Atom. I purchased some JLA comics a few months before the show came out to get a better understanding of the character. My feelings were neutral. However, when the show started up, I was surprised how much I liked Ray. He is definitely not my favorite. That spot is reserved for Captain Cold and Heat Wave only. But there is something about his positive, can-do attitude that makes me just want to scoop him up and save him from a Russian prison. I understand how Mick feels.

How many greats was that again? I lost track. Let me start over.

I get that any show needs a good romance, and I'm usually all for it. But I really think this whole love triangle between Ray, Kendra, and dead-Carter needs to end. It's not as interesting. The two people are just completely opposite characters. I suppose I'd rather have her with Ray than with Cisco, but still. Every time she and Ray are on scene together, I groan. The show cut out from Captain Cold and Heatwave's heart-to-heart/fist-to-fist scene just to show Atom and Hawkgirl making out. That was not OK. From how this episode played out, it appears that Kendra has decided she is going to stay with Ray despite her flashbacks with Carter. Since the show has been making such a big deal about these two character's relationship, I don't think it's going to go away any time soon. If you ship them for some reason, you should be okay. However, if you think their romance is an annoying waste of valuable episode time, you are probably out of luck.

What is your appeal? Trick question. There is none. Go away.

The last and most important part of this review is centered on Heat Wave and Captain Cold. The episode actually begins with Rip Hunter talking to Heat Wave in the brig. He asks for Mick's help, but Mick, still mad, refuses. Rip was a huge jerk in episode 1x07. He basically told Mick he was only on the team because he was a package deal to get Captain Cold. Rip apologized, but I still want Mick and Len to punch him for being an absolute [insert cuss word of choice]. I do appreciate how he said it was his fault Mick was marooned, not Len's. It seems everyone wants Captain Cold and Heatwave to be buddies again. I 100% agree.

"I owe you an apology, Mr. Rory." You think?

Smartest thing you've said Rip since episode 1.

The other teammate to talk to Mick is Sarah. She reminds Mick that Leonard risked his life for him. She also says that when Len thought he was going to die back on the ship, he was continuously thinking about Mick. White Canary serves as the intermediator between the two men. She is the one to make Mick think more about forgiving Cold. She is also the one to convince Cold to go see Heatwave. She earned some serious brownie points this episode in my book. She obviously must be a Rogues fan herself.

Mick is so jelly. Len is spending all his time with Sarah, and he's afraid Cold already has a new best friend.

The last meeting with Mick is obviously with Len. The writers handled this situation perfectly. Rather than have the two talk it out, they simply punched it out. Paralleling a scene from the New 52 Flash comics, Captain Cold and Heatwave fought. However, Mick was able to stop himself from killing Len. Even though Len told him to kill him, Mick couldn't do it. This is the Heatwave I know and love from the comics. He would never kill. This was just so amazing and perfect and djskalfosuidahfklashfio;asd. Okay, done fangirling. But honestly, just look at these stills.

Len took a really big beating for Mick, and Mick was able to overcome his psychotic tendencies for his best friend. The BrOTP is so real I can't even handle it. Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller, the actors who play Heat Wave and Captain Cold, deliver their parts so well. It's also nice to note that Mick is already out of his cage and back on deck with the rest of the crew. It kind of seems a bit rushed, the whole thing. In one episode Mick is "killed". The next he isn't even mentioned. Then he reveals himself to be Chronos, and just one episode after that he's back on the team. I'm not complaining; I'm so glad to have my two Rogues back in one piece. It will be great to see the two regain their trust over the course of the rest of the season.

8/9 of the family is back together! Yay!

Heatwave Special: Chronos and Kummen

So epic!!! I need a replica of his goggles!

Heatwave has had quite a spotlight put on him these last few weeks in Legends of Tomorrow. First, on episode 1x07, "Marooned", he was supposedly killed by his best friend and partner, Captain Cold. Last Thursday's episode, season 1 episode 9, "Left Behind", thankfully proved otherwise. Captain Cold did not kill Heat Wave, but knocked him out, planning on coming back for him at another time. For some reason, Cold was never able to come back. Instead, it is revealed that, as viewers speculated, Heat Wave became Chronos. Again Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell perform some amazing, emotional acting skills for Mick Rory's betrayal. Chronos is the masked villain from the first episode of the show. Apparently, the time masters rescued Heatwave and trained him to become a bounty hunter in some sort of dimension where time is irrelevant. (Please note that when I refer to Heatwave, I am referring to the television character. When I refer to Heat Wave, I am referring to the comic book character)

Plot Twist: Heatwave is Boba Fett.

Who is Chronos from the comics, and how does Heat Wave connect to him? Chronos is Ray Palmer/The Atom's archenemy. Chronos, whose real name is David Clinton, uses time as his gimmick. He eventually turns from petty thief to full time time traveler. Like the Rogues, Chronos also made a bargain with the demon Neron. This deal backfired when Chronos found that he aged every time he time jumped. He was thought to have died, but later it turned out he was posing as a friend of the new Atom, Ryan Choi. This is similar to Heatwave, Ray's friend, turning out to be the masked time villain. There was also a second Chronos, Walker Gabriel, who took over Clinton's time research.

Much more appropriate color scheme.

You can see the parallels between comic Chronos and "Legends of Tomorrow" Chronos. There are also parallels between the show and a comic book version of the "Justice League Unlimited" animated series. In one issue, Chronos travels back in time to prevent the death of his brother, Bobby, by a fire. Unfortunately, preventing Bobby's death would upset the time stream, so Bobby temporarily travels to the future to convince his brother to move on.

Just punch him already Mick. Then let Len punch him. Then let me punch him.

The Legends team has decided to try to rehabilitate Mick onto the team. The new promo for next week's episode, "Progeny", shows Rip Hunter talking to Mick and asking him for his help. It will be very interesting to see their conversation, since Rip was such a jerk to Mick and kind of responsible for the whole thing. I just want Mick to be back to his lovable, scary, pyro self.

The other big news about Heatwave is that fans will finally get to see him as a kid in episode 1x11, "Last Refuge". Actor Mitchell Kummen will be playing Mick Rory as a 14 year old teenager. The CW describes young Mick as "a confused teenager whose love of fire becomes lethal." 

Absolutely love Heat Wave's art style in the comics.

There is actually a comic specifically about Heat Wave's back story. He was obsessed with fire even as a boy. Once, Mick caught his house on fire by accident with his family inside. He wanted to help them escape, but he was so captivated by the flames he let them burn. Afterwards, he was sent to live with his uncle. He was forced to run away when he burns an older boy who locked him in a freezer. Mick goes on to join the circus as a fire eater, and eventually burns the circus down as well. Since Heat Wave has cryophobia, the fear of cold, he started as Captain Cold's adversary. That is, until Len introduced Mick to the Rogues. There are multiple times in the comics where Heat Wave turns into a hero. Each time, he is forced to return to villainy because of his pyromania.

This comic is too sad.

It will be really interesting to see Mick's childhood story on television, especially since it is so emotional. They might even have Heatwave trying to save his family, as a nod to Chronos' backstory. However they roll with the story, whether a time traveling trip or flashbacks, I cannot wait until April. We can all agree that we need Mickey and Lenny to be friends again.

Why can't you be friends??? Just make up and start the Rogues already!!!

The Flash 2x17 "Flash Back" Easter Egg Review

So there were so many Easter Egg's in Tuesday's episode, "Flash Back". Let's dive right in!

                                                                                                                                 

The easter egg that stood out most to me was the list of Flash's villains. There are both classic Rogues and more obscure villains. It took a moment for me to figure out the pattern, but it has almost every single villain in the order they made there appearance.

From Right to Left, the list reads

What I don't understand is what the Xs are for. All of the profiles are Xed out but Hartley. Even the villains to the right of Hartley that Barry would not have met yet in that time are Xed out.. These include Peek-A-Boo, Weather Wizard (Mark Mardon), and The Trickster (James Jesse). The Xs can't stand for villains dead or in custody since Heat Wave and Captain Cold are on a mission in Legends of Tomorrow. So the Xes elude me. I'm also not entirely sure if the 2nd to last photo is Mark Mardon or another villain.

What also makes me curious is the villains absent from this list. It skips over Roy G. Bivolo/Rainbow Raider from the 8th episode, "Flash vs. Arrow". Obviously there is no Gorilla Grodd photo, so episodes 13 and 14 are also skipped over. They skipped over episode 16, "Rogue Time", which introduces Lisa Snart/Golden Glider. It makes me wonder if they are not considering her a villain since season 2 episode 3, "Family of Rogues". The second Trickster, Axel walker, is also absent from the list. I really hope he comes back one day though. He is one of my favorite Rogues in the New 52 Flash comics.

It is very cute that they end the list on episode 1x17, considering this episode is 2x17. Very nice little detail.

                                                                                                                                

Moving on, I wanted to address a few of the newspaper clippings seen next to the pictures.

Nothing stood out to me particularly. These clippings merely reflected past events of the show. I did notice that the side article on the bottom picture was written by Mason Bridge, with is a nice little homage to Iris's old boss who was killed by the Reverse Flash.

                                                                                                                                    

If you've seen Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (which I'm sure you have), the Ezra Miller's Flash makes an appearance in Batman's dream. He says, "Bruce, Bruce! Lois! Lois Lane, she is the key. Am I too soon? I'm too soon! You were right about him, you always have been right about him! Fear him! Find us Bruce! You have to find us!" Basically the Barry of the cinematic universe traveled back in time to warn Batman about something, but visited him to early. I felt like this was a tiny nod to Ezra Miller's Flash from the movie. Except in this episode, our Flash visits Hartley Rathaway a little to soon.

I wonder if Firestorm's fate will change because of this? Since Legends of Tomorrow uses Jax, not Ronnie, as the 2nd half of Firestorm, I'm not exactly sure what this line means for Ronnie's future. But it clearly must be important, since they seem to emphasize this line on the show.

                                                                                                                                  

 The line above is said by Eobard Thawne, the Reverse Flash. What would be insanely cool is if Zoom and the Reverse Flash teamed up in the season finale of season 2. Next week fans are getting the backstory of Zoom, and it is possible that Eobard might have some connection to the black-suit speedster. It may also be possible Eobard is referring to Kid Flash, Wally West, and Trajectory. It makes me wonder just how many other speedsters there are? Will fans get Inertia any time soon?

                                                                                                                               

And finally, its time for me to address Hartley Rathaway as a hero and as a son. Let me give a quick backstory from the comics about the Pied Piper.

 

So Hartley is born deaf to two super rich parents. His dad is able to give Hartley some hearing implants so he can regain his hearing ability. After that, Hartley becomes obsessed with sound. He turns into a musical prodigy and learns to hypnotize people with his flute. Eventually he turns to crime, and while his parents don't approve, they tolerate it. They simply pay his bail and help him come up with aliases to keep a good family reputation.

After a while, Hartley turns from crime and becomes reformed, working as a vigilante. His parents still don't approve of his work as an outlaw, and eventually disown him. Finally, Hartley's mom, Rachel, writes a letter asking him to come back home. Hartley does, only to find that the Turtle (he was recently in episode 2x10 "Potential Energy") has taken his parents hostage. Hartley frees his parents and saves the day, becoming redeemed in his parents eyes. It's pretty emotional.

The one thing I hate about comics is that no one ever gets a happily ever after. Rathaway's parents are eventually murdered, and Hartley gets framed for it. He even believes he must have killed them. Wally West discovers that Hartley is innocent and that Mirror Master killed his parents. Not knowing this, Hartley breaks out of prison and teams up with The Rogues, hoping to infiltrate the team. He ends up on the run with the Trickster, James Jesse, when multiple super heroes try to kill the Rogues for being tricked by Inertia into killing Barth Allen.

Now on to my theory. It has been officially confirmed that Mirror Master is going to be in season two of the Flash. I think that it would be an interesting story line if they introduced the villain by having him kill Hartley's parents. The latest episode of The Flash seemed to emphasize the part at the end of the show about Hartley having dinner with his parents. I want to see if Hartley really is going to stay hero or not. He is the only one of the Rogues to go straight and stay hero permanently. So to have his parents killed, especially since he was so close to them in the comics, would be a big test for him. Fans could see if he would remain on Team Flash or, pardon my pun, go Rogue.

Also I really want to meet Hartley's family in this new timeline. He actually has a younger, disabled sister, Jerrie Rathaway, in the comics, and that might be something the show could work with. The last time we saw Hartley's parents was in season 1 episode 10, "Revenge of the Rogues". They had bought a very expensive painting called "Fire and Ice", which was stolen from them by Heat Wave and Captain Cold. So did that not happen in this timeline since Hartley is cool with his parents or what? So many questions to be answered in upcoming episodes!
